My Story
Why I Built Cikgu Barrier
As a risk management trainer Malaysia, I spent years consulting across Oil & Gas, manufacturing, maritime, and aviation — and kept encountering the same problem in every organisation I worked with. Companies had all the right documents — HIRARC forms, incident reports, safety procedures — but the documents weren't changing anything. People were injured. The same incidents kept happening. Audits were passed. Nothing was fixed.
The root cause was always the same: organisations were training people to fill in forms, not to think about risk. A risk assessment was something you completed before a job started, not a tool that helped you understand what could actually go wrong. An incident investigation was a paper exercise, not a process that found real causes.
I started Cikgu Barrier because I believe that's a solvable problem — and that the solution starts with better training. The methods already exist — HIRARC, Bow-Tie Analysis, Tripod Beta — but most organisations have never been taught to use them properly. The training available in Malaysia is almost entirely compliance-focused: pass the exam, tick the box, file the certificate. Nobody is teaching people to actually apply the thinking.
